Jennifer Brownstein holds a B.A. in English from Temple University and an M.S. Ed in TESOL from The University of Pennsylvania. She has over fifteen years experience as an instructor and administrator for ESOL programs in public schools, colleges and non-profits. Jennifer has designed and implemented curriculum for high schools and universities and has coordinated academic programs of all types. In addition to presenting at TESOL conferences at the state and national level, she has also taught TESOL and Linguistics courses to aspiring ESOL teachers. She has taught abroad as well as stateside, and has seen learners from all backgrounds and proficiency levels respond to her energetic, student-centered teaching style. Julia Sandoval is a graduate of the University of Pittsburgh with a degree in linguistics. She is an avid language learner and speaks various languages such as Spanish and French. She also spent time teaching ESL in Hungary, where she got certified to teach English with by a Cambridge CELTA course.

Tanya Tanya holds a Bachelor’s degree in Communications and Sociology from Trinity University-Washington and a Master’s of Education in Curriculum & Instruction from George Mason University. As an ESL Instructor, Tanya’s goal is for students to acquire fluency in English that will open the doors to many education and employment opportunities. She believes that the future of education is in ensuring that all students have the opportunity to be creative, collaborative, and critical thinkers, while also being able to pursue their passions and interests.

Michael Eisenhauer graduated with a B.S. from the University of Idaho. He is currently enrolled at George Washington University in Washington, D.C. and will graduate in May 2012. Originally from Idaho, he enjoys movies, books, laughing with friends, and eating delicious foods.

Henry Jochum graduated from George Mason University with a B.A. in English, with a concentration in writing, and He is currently pursuing a Master’s Degree in education at Shenandoah University, with a TESOL specialization. Whenever he gets the chance, he likes to go horseback riding here in Virginia, and at least once a year he tries to get away to the Outer Banks of North Carolina for windsurfing and relaxation.

His diverse private sector and higher education teaching experiences include technical and business leadership classes as well as various mentorship and facilitation experiences with distance learning curriculums.

Michael Sullivan holds a B.A. and an M.A. in English from George Mason University. After teaching overseas for the Si-Sa Foreign Language Institute in Seoul, South Korea, Mike has been teaching English-as-a-Second language to college and adult learners at various schools of higher learning in the Northern Virginia area. Mike enjoys reading about different cultures, food, soccer, movies and the world news.

Julia Yang received her B.S. in Elementary Education from the University of Maryland at College Park.? She was a former elementary school teacher.? She taught ESL to various age groups overseas for five years. While teaching ESL overseas, Julia received her TESOL certification from the University of Anaheim in California.? She enjoys teaching, loves her job and feels that education is very important.? She feels that teaching is the second most rewarding job (first is being a mother).

Hannah received her B.A. in Anthropology and Middle School Education from James Madison University. Currently, she is a supervisor at an accredited local learning center for minors and also mentors and tutors several ESL youth independently.

Carole Vinograd Bausell holds a doctorate in education from the Johns Hopkins University and a Certificate in English Language Teaching to Adults (CELTA) from Cambridge University. In addition to teaching English, Carole also works as a senior editor and writer. In her spare time she enjoys music, theatre, dance, independent films, and kayaking.

Karen received her Bachelor of Arts Degree from the University of Salamanca in Spain. She received her Master’s Degree from the University of Miami, Florida. Her academic studies have focused on foreign languages, linguistics and international relations. Karen likes to help students with English conversation and writing skills. In her free time, she enjoys hiking and traveling.

Barbara Schweitzer has taught English as a Second language (ESL) in Lesotho, Okinawa, Bangladesh, Korea, Germany, and the Czech Republic. Barbara gained her certification to teach English as a Foreign Language from the TEFL Institute in Chicago, Illinois. Recently, she has also graduated from Walden University in Non-profit Management and Leadership. Barbara is the proud mother of two teen-aged children who keep her very busy when she is not teaching ESL.

Richard Creech has taught English, public speaking, and American civics in several programs in the Washington, DC area. He has a bachelor’s degree in linguistics from Harvard University and law degrees from Northwestern University and the University of Utrecht in the Netherlands. His interests include foreign languages, travel, history, reading, music, theater and movies.

Dionne Manos is extremely excited to be teaching at Columbia College! She is currently getting her MA in Global Affairs; Global Education at George Mason University. Dionne loves travelling and has been to: Japan, China, South Korea, Ukraine, Belgium, Honduras, and Guatemala. Dionne enjoys cooking healthy foods, swimming, hiking, and hanging out with friends. Her favorite food is Korean!

Lisa McNee received her B.A. from UCLA and her M.A. from San Jose State University. She holds teaching credentials in adult and elementary education. Lisa has taught ESL to adults and children for over 15 years in a variety of settings. Lisa loves languages and culture and enjoys teaching her students as well as learning from them.

Leigh-Anne graduated from Carleton College with a B.A. in English. She has taught EFL in Thessaloniki, Greece and Seoul, South Korea and is excited to now be teaching ESL at Columbia College. In her free time, she loves reading, traveling, and playing soccer and ultimate frisbee.

Kathy Andrew-Williams holds Master’s degrees from LaSalle University, Villanova University, and the University of Denver. Kathy has more than 25 years experience teaching in K-12, university and adult education settings. Her expertise includes teaching Spanish and English as second languages. Kathy is also certified to teach in Pennsylvania and New Jersey.

Philip Lee is majoring MS in Marketing at Johns Hopkins University, and will graduate in May 2013. He had various higher education teaching experiences. He teaches critical reasoning and problem solving strategies English test takers. His former students said that they learned how to think and obtained strong self-esteem from his passionate and well-designed lectures. He currently teaches a TOEFL class at Columbia College.

Rachel earned an M.A. in Teaching English as a Second Language from Hawaii Pacific University and a B.A. in Communications with a Spanish minor from the University of Dayton. For the past five years, she has taught English to adults and children in the U.S., and overseas in Viet Nam, Mexico and most recently Australia. She enjoys learning about her students, traveling and studying Spanish.

I have a B.A. from UCLA in sociology and I am originally from Denmark, so I understand what it is like to learn a foreign language. I love to teach different cultures and like to create a nurturing, fun and supportive environment for learning! I am also a ceramic artist, yoga teacher and a mom of 3 girls! I love hiking and the outdoors!

VanDoan-D0617 Van Doan started teaching ESL with migrant workers and refugees while in college and continued doing so during his time in Peace Corps Nicaragua. Along with English courses, he taught a number of other classes in elementary and middle schools at his site in northern Nicaragua. Later on, for over three years, he was a manager and instructor at an elite English immersion academy in South Korea where he worked with elementary, middle, and high school students. With his free time, he enjoys running, photography, yoga, cooking, and sport climbing.

Elizabeth received her MS Ed from Buffalo State University and has enjoyed teaching in various schools around the world. Her love for travel has allowed her to experience many different cultures and gain knowledge from her students while she contributes to their learning. She draws energy from the DC area and can most often be found touring the monuments and museums every chance she gets.

From Central Pennsylvania, Kelli studied English and Communications at the University of Delaware, and has more recently earned a Master’s Degree in TESOL from the Institute of Education, University of London, in London, England. She is relatively new to the DC area, having taught previously in Cusco, Peru; Atlanta, GA; and London. When not teaching, she spends most of her time baking and watching baseball.

Jorge A. Torres has a B.A. in English and minor in History from Catholic University of P.R. and several credits for M.A. in Educational Leadership from Argosy University of D.C. A veteran of both the US Navy and US Army, he has taught Elementary, and Secondary schools in Puerto Rico, Virginia and Maryland. He also taught Spanish and ESL to children and adults at various schools in the Northern Virginia area and Silver Spring, Maryland. Jorge enjoys reenacting Civil War battles, visiting historical places, reading and is also an accomplished musician for a couple of salsa and Latin Jazz bands in the area.

My name is Kirt Ways. I am originally from Mount Laurel, New Jersey. After I graduated from Rowan College of New Jersey I went to Japan to teach ESL for a year. I enjoyed it so much that I stayed for fifteen years. In that time I have taught at the junior high school, high school, university, and graduate school levels. I am thrilled to be working here and helping the students of Columbia College.

I hold both BA and MA degrees in ESL/TESOL. I also have over 14 years of teaching experience. I taught at several universitities such as Geogetown ESL Summer program, NOVA. I also taught Arabic and French at American University, University of Virginia, University of Maryland, Johns Hopkins University and George Washington University. I love teaching languages but my biggest passion is teaching ESL. I am teaching students and make sure I include all their learning styles in my students centered class. In my free time, I like to read and study and spend time with my family.

My name is Melissa Rupertus and I live in Alexandria, VA. I was born and raised in New York and my family still lives there today. I earned my TEFL certification in July 2013 in Barcelona, Spain. I currently works as an elementary school counselor for Fairfax County Public Schools, but was a teacher eight years prior to going back to school for my counseling degree. In my free time I enjoy traveling, reading, spending time with friends and family and the outdoors. I am looking very forward to getting back in the classroom to teach ESL!

He is a graduate of the George Washington University with a Bachelor of Arts degree and holds TESOL certification from Oxford University. In addition to studying Latin and Spanish, he has done graduate level studies in Urban Planning.

Iris Nguyen graduated from the University of North Carolina at Greensboro with a B.A. in political science. After college, she went to Vietnam to teach at An Giang University through a program called Teachers for Vietnam. There, she taught many English language classes to students between the ages of 18-22. Since moving to DC this summer, she has worked at DC Public Schools in the Office of Teaching and Learning and the Office of Bilingual Education. She hopes to obtain her M.A.T. in the near future and continue her work with ESL students.

Marlene Mouanga graduated from George Mason University with a Master’s Degree in Organizational Development and Knowledge Management. She has taught ESL to adult learners for over a year, having volunteered at organizations like the ESL & Immigrant Ministries (ESLIM) in Falls Church and the Arlington Employment and Education Program (REEP) in Arlington. Marlene also has previous experience teaching at Columbia College. When she isn’t teaching, Marlene enjoys reading, trying new restaurants, and spending time with her family and friends.
